EBRD launches 'Approach to Nature' to halt biodiversity loss

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has launched its 'Approach to Nature Conservation', which outlines how the Bank can deliver more benefits to nature and halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has launched its Approach to Nature, outlining how the bank will deliver more benefits to nature and halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

The Approach is guided by the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and aligns with the EBRD's transformational mission.

The EBRD will capitalize on its decades of experience in environmental protection and its position as a multilateral development bank (MDB) focused on the private sector to scale up action to protect nature and biodiversity.

The EBRD will protect nature by reviewing its environmental and social policies, invest in nature by exploring new financing models, and disclose nature-related information.

The EBRD will work with its partners and donors to scale up action to protect nature, including financing, policies and information disclosure. The EBRD leads or participates in a number of initiatives such as the Blue Mediterranean Partnership, the Clean Ocean Initiative, the Integrated Plan for Clean and Healthy Oceans, and the Public Development Banks' Call for Positive Action for the Oceans.

Adonai Herrera-Martinez, Director of the EBRD's Environment and Sustainable Development Department, said: "The EBRD's approach to nature reflects the institution's efforts to scale up action for nature. The approach demonstrates the EBRD's alignment with its mission, highlights its experience in helping to restore degraded ecosystems and provides a vision for more action for nature in the future. We are delighted to be launching this methodology at COP28 and look forward to supporting this agenda that is so close to our hearts.

Rachael Barza, Head of Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance at the EBRD, said: "The EBRD has the opportunity to leverage its position as a private sector and market-oriented multilateral development bank to influence real change that will have a positive impact on nature and biodiversity. The actions outlined in the Nature Approach will drive the Bank's contribution to the Global Nature Positive Goal - a goal we must all support to ensure a sustainable future.
