Liel Abada: Israel winger joins Charlotte but admits Celtic exit was 'not in my plans'

Liel Abada has completed his transfer to Major League Soccer club Charlotte while admitting "leaving Celtic wasn't in my plans".

Manager Brendan Rodgers had recently said Abada was not ready to play amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

"Life's unpredictable turns remind us that we're not always in control," the 22-year-old Abada said on Instagram.

Abada faced pressure from compatriots to leave Celtic following some fans' show of support for Palestinian people and has sat out the Scottish champions' latest five games.

"After two and half incredible years, the time has come to bid farewell," he said. "The past six months have been a personal challenge, yet the overwhelming support from the gaffer, coaches and board has been my rock. Their unwavering faith during these times won't be forgotten but cherished forever."

Abada joined Celtic in July 2021 from Maccabi Petah Tikva in his homeland and was a key player under Ange Postecoglou, scoring 28 goals and providing 20 assists as the Parkhead club won five out of six domestic trophies.

After signing a new four-year deal last summer, injury derailed his campaign as he spent three months out with a thigh issue, but he has rarely featured since recovering.

"Reflecting on my journey here brings a smile to my face, the trophies lifted, goals celebrated, electric atmospheres and moments of pure bliss will forever be etched in my memory," he said.

Abada went on to thank everyone at Celtic, "the incredible Israeli community in Glasgow" and "the Celtic fans that stood by me".

Now he begins "a new chapter" by joining former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield at the side who finished ninth in the Eastern Conference and 19th overall in the 2023 MLS season.

Charlotte general manager Zoran Krnet told his club website: "Liel has been one of the most exciting young wingers in Europe and we're delighted to welcome him to Charlotte.

"He's an elite goalscorer and chance creator who is a proven winner that is determined to bring trophies home to the club and our supporters."
